Installing the Performance Overview Plug-In in VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 4

For those of you upgrading to vCenter 2.5 U4 and and are planning to use the new Performance Overview Plugin, there are some additional steps required to making this work.  Pretty much the biggest thing is that you need the Java Development Kit installed on the vCenter server. All of this is covered in VMware KB 1008296, but for your convenience I’ve included the steps here.

VM Storage - RAID Protection and Performance

In the VM blogging world today there was some discussion on which RAID level to use with your virtual environment (Professional VMware Blog & Roger Lund’s IT Blog). This is not an exact science, it really depends on what your doing and what your budget is - and what your storage array supports. If your as fortunate as I am and have a NetApp, you get to use their patented RAID-DP which is their flavor of RAID 6 (ADG) offering double parity - meaning you can sustain a dual disk failure per RAID group and see no performance degradation when repairing the RAID group.
