Speaking at NetApp Accelerate

Update
Sad to hear that NetApp Accelerate has been canceled.  You can definitely tell our economy isn’t doing too good when conferences like these are canceled. You can read the official NetApp statement on the cancellation on their website.

NFS Datastores and what was their BIG issue…

This all started back about a year ago when I decided to move my datastores from Fibre Channel to NFS. The data was already on a NetApp FAS960c so I was enjoying thin provisioning and snapshots…but I wanted more!

VMworld 2008

I guess I should start writing about VMworld 2008 and my experiences. I really should have started this while I was there and fresh in my mind. Overall it was a decent show, some good sessions and tons of parties and social mixers to meet people that enjoy virtualization as much as I do.

Changing the IP of your NFS Datastore

I’ve ran into some issues today trying to change the IP address of my NFS Datastore. Our filer has a nice 10GbE interface that I’m not using, so my thought was to put my hosts into Maintenance Mode one at a time, remove the old datastore and connect the new one…which is essentially the same exact mount but going over a different interface. Boy was I wrong…

NetApp Snapshots in ESX

UPDATE: I have re-written this script for enhancements, these can be found on the post titled NetApp Snapshots in ESX – Take 2

Many of you NetApp/ESX users should know by now that SnapManager for VI has been released. Many of you should also know that NetApp’s costs of licensing such tools can be fairly pricey. For those of us that can’t afford or justify the purchase of SMVI, I give to you a very handy script that I wrote….

Changing VLAN of a Port Group

In the event you need to change the VLAN of any of your Port Groups here is some good instruction on doing just that. Remember, VLANs are configured at the Port Group level and not the vSwitch level. This allows you to trunk as many VLANs you need to your vSwitch’s then create dedicated Port Groups for each of those Virtual LANs.
